Texas Heart Attack Prevention Bill (Hb 1290)

In June 2009, Texas Governor Rick Perry signed into law the Texas Heart Attack Prevention Bill (Hb 1290). This bill requires that insurance companies provide some coverage of screening tests related to heart disease. Specifically, minimum coverage of up to $200 is mandated for either CT scanning measuring coronary artery calcification (CAC) or ultrasonography measuring carotid intima-medical thickening. These tests are used to screen for early coronary artery disease (CAD).

Those who are covered under this law are:

Males over 45 and under 76 years of age
Females over 55 and under 76 years of age
Individuals, regardless of age, who have diabetes or a high or intermediate Framingham Risk Score (FRS)

The testing included in the bill can be undergone every five years, and must be completed at a facility that is certified by a recognized national organization.
